We've all heard that 1200 calories is the absolute lowest you should go and that fasting isn't safe or effective. So why is it okay for patients post-bariatric surgery to eat only a few hundred calories a day via a liquid diet?

I was reading about bariatric surgery after accidentally going down a wikipedia hole that started in a completely different place. The information I'm reading says that for the first two months after surgery, patients are on an all liquid diet. Even two to six months post surgery they are still advised not to eat more than 900-1000 calories.

I do not have any moral problems with bariatric surgery, it just seems so drastic. But if it's okay for patients to eat that little on a liquid diet and eat only 900 calories a day for months even after the trauma of surgery, why aren't people ever advised to simply try that diet without all the slicing and dicing?
