What is Environmental Quality Index
Before we talk about environment and Type 2 Diabetes risk, let us understand about the Environmental Quality Index, which has been developed which contains data on the quality of air, water and land as well as sociodemographic factors in a given area. Factors included in sociodemographic factors are average household income, education violent crimes rates, or even property crime rates. There are many other environmental factors which have also been included in Environmental Quality Index. That is, how many fast food restaurants were in an area, how many fatal accidents occurred and how many highways, roadways, or public housing units were there. Scientific value of Environmental Quality Index has been explained by Dr. Robert Sargis. According to him cumulative assessment of EQI is unique.
Environmental factors and Type 2 diabetes
- The results showed a poor environment quality that increases the prevalence of type 2 diabetes.
- The research showed higher risk of diabetes in rural areas due to inferior air quality and other sociodemographic factors.
- The studies showed that negative changes in air quality might increase insulin resistance. However, environmental influence is much more than pollution.
Understanding local social and economic demographic factors can help develop environmental policies to improve health conditions of the people.
